If your child has a wheat allergy, you may want to purchase a separate toaster to
prevent cross contamination issues. Toasters are not designed to allow for adequate
cleaning to remove allergenic proteins. Many models have a removable crumb tray,
but this feature will not enable cleaning of the other mechanisms that contact the
bread. Therefore, an additional toaster will likely be a wise and safe choice. You
can mark the toaster in a manner that will enable all family members to recognize
it is designated for the wheat allergic member(s) of the family.
If your family member has a dairy intolerance or allergy, an ice cream maker may be
worthy of further consideration. Ice cream makers allow you to prepare frozen
desserts without the risk of cross contamination with dairy or other allergens.
Fruit juice, alternative dairy products, and pureed fruits, are items that can be
used in the preparation of dairy-free treats. There are several types of ice cream
makers available. Some models will require a special salt to aid in the freezing
process. These are typically the most economical but can be messy. Another type has
a removable canister that is placed in the freezer and eliminates the need for
messy salt. Ice cream makers in this category are moderately priced, but are worth
the investment if you intend to use the item on a regular basis. More elaborate
commercial style units are available, but are the most costly. This type of unit
implements a built in freezing device and allows quick, professional results with a
limited amount of time and preparation.
